I can't remember a time when I did not have a pencil or paintbrush in my hand, sketching the objects I
saw around me, or using my imagination to invent new scenes.
Wordsworth said that "poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from
emotion recollected in tranquility." This is true of the visual arts as well. In my paintings I try to capture
the emotion of a fleeting moment in time, whether it is a conductor lifting his baton or a flower
bursting into ripeness. A woman washing her hair. A couple of children climbing a tree. A foggy day,
or a brisk autumn scene. These impressions are evanescent; art preserves them forever.
The artists who influenced me include Matisse, Monet, and Chagall. I love color, and my work is
saturated with it.
