Coffee House Concert
Saturday, April 20, 2019 @ 7:30pm
Delaware Friends of Folk, Dover
On Saturday, April 20, Delaware Friends of Folk will present their monthly coffee house concert in the Bennett Chapel at Wesley College, corner of Division and N. Bradford Streets in Dover, beginning at 7:30 pm. Admission for this special event is $10 for members of Delaware Friends of Folk, $15 for non-members, and those 12 and under are admitted free. Fresh-brewed coffee, baked cookies and other snacks will be available.
This special event will feature an evening with The Kennedys. Pete and Maura Kennedy, both East Coast natives, met in Austin, Texas, joined forces with Nanci Griffith's Blue Moon Orchestra for a couple of years, and set out on a road that, for nearly 25 years, has led them all over the US and the UK many times. In 2012, The Kennedys were busy writing, recording, producing and touring after reuniting with Griffith, a long-time friend and collaborator. They continued to tour with her in 2013, both as her support act and as band-mates on tour in support of her "Inersection" album.
In 2015 Pete and Maura celebrated their twentieth anniversary both as a band and a married couple. Rather than indulge in a nostalgic look backward, they took Dylan's dictum "don't look back" to heart; writing and recording forty new songs. As a result, 2015 saw a Maura solo CD, a Pete solo CD, and the release of "West," a duo release that seamlessly weaves their influences over the last two decades: Buddy Holly style roots, the tuneful cadences of the Everly Brothers, and the ringing 12-string jangle of the early Byrds, interspersed with darker moments that recall British folk rock a la Fairport Convention. Ultimately, Pete and Maura knit these disparate threads into a coat of many colors that sounds like a "best of The Kennedys," but is in reality an all-new collection of songs. The road west is central to the American mythos; it's the search for musical roots and the fulfillment of a personal American dream that takes shape in songs. Now, in their 23rd year as recording artists, The Kennedys are busier than ever, continually touring the US and UK. They've just release a new album, “Safe until Tomorrow”, and Pete's memoir/autobiography was published in mid-2018. The evening will feature two full sets from the duo, with solo songs from each, and the usual Kennedy surprises.
Delaware Friends of Folk have received a Special Presenters Initiative grant from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and the Delaware Division of the Arts to support The Kennedy’s appearance. A community outreach event will be held with Pete Kennedy leading a free guitar-playing workshop at the Bennett Chapel during the afternoon of their April 20 show.
Delaware Friends of Folk coffee house concerts are supported, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on www.DelawareScene.com.
