Amelie (Amie) Sloan was a longtime member of the Rehoboth Art League and the niece of one of the league’s founding members, Ethel P.B. Leach. She took her first pottery course with Dorothy Lewis, wife of artist Jack Lewis, in 1973. Known for her hand building approach to clay, and through trial and error, she took on the subject matter of sculpting ethnic clay masks which demonstrates her abiding interest in the clay medium and in anthropology, history, and decoration. Amie passed away in 2021 at the age of 101 but leaves a lasting legacy at the league, with a namesake room in the pottery studio on campus as well as an endowed exhibition award offered annually for excellence in ceramic hand building.
This special exhibit will showcase many of her ceramic hand-built masks that were part of her series “Faces of Many Nations.” The public will have the rare opportunity to purchase them.
